World Music Reading: Magazines and Web News

Did you even know there were people out there producing entire publications dedicated to what we amorphously call "world music"? Some focus more on older traditions, other tilt more towards a Euro-American "folk" sound, while others take a special interest in the kind of innovative fusions on old traditions that we at Jumbie hold close to heart.

All promise jewels of reading and new discoveries for the curious reader and listener.

Global Rhythm
American's leading magazine of world music. From traditional to world-pop and dancehall, across the globe - also global travel and food reporting. Published monthly, with a free CD sampling new releases of diverse artists.
On the website: excerpts from articles in latest issue, plus dozens of record reviews.

Songlines
British magazine covering the world's music from traditional to popular to contemporary. With a particular interest in innovative artistic pioneers and international "fusions" that really work. Published bimonthly, with a free CD with songs from the top reviewed albums in each issue.
On the website: list of articles from latest issue.

Dirty Linen

Previously "Folk Roots," this British magazine has been covering modern and traditional music with roots from around the globe, from Anglo-trad to Zanzibar pop for over 25 years.

Penguin Eggs
Canada's folk, roots, and world music magazine. Published 4 times a year.
On the website: one article from the latest issue, along with 2 dozen record reviews.

World Music Magazine (in Italian)
Honestly, we don't read Italian, so we have no idea what these articles say… but from their website, it looks like a good read for all you Italian world-music fans out there!
